Reflection Questions
  • What is the significance of Jesus calling disciples to follow him in Mark 1:16-20 in light of the family-centeredness and group orientation of the Jewish/Mediterranean cultures? You are a newly summoned disciple of Jesus. Jesus has just told you that in order to follow him you must leave your family and become dependent on the hospitality of others. Using your reading as a guide, (a) what response can you expect from your family when you share this news with them, and (b) how will you reply to their response?

  • Explain what is meant by the “oral tradition” behind the four Gospels. Mention at least two problems or questions that arise due to this phenomenon.
